Indiana has the simplest RN renewal in this whole reference. There is no continuing education requirement. None. You confirm your record is clean, pay $50, and you’re renewed for two years. If you’ve been dreading a CE tally, Indiana is the state where there’s nothing to tally.
No continuing education, in the board’s own words
The Indiana State Board of Nursing states it plainly: registered nurses and licensed practical nurses are not required to obtain continuing education for regular license renewal. Indiana is one of a small handful of states that asks working nurses to maintain their own competence without mandating a specific hour count to prove it. The board still expects you to keep your skills current, it just doesn’t make you buy and log CE credits to renew.
Because there’s no hour target, the CE calculator on this site isn’t shown for Indiana, there’s nothing to count toward. What you do at renewal is answer the disclosure questions, the ones about disciplinary history, criminal matters, and professional conduct. Answer “yes” to any and you’ll owe the board a full written explanation, so those questions, not CE, are the part of an Indiana renewal that actually needs attention.
The one exception is at the top of the ladder: advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority must complete 30 hours of continuing education per cycle, at least 8 of them in pharmacology (with an added opioid-prescribing requirement tied to a controlled-substance registration). If you’re a staff RN, that rule isn’t yours. If you prescribe, it is.
The fee and the deadline
Renewal is $50 for the biennium, set in the board’s fee rule at 848 IAC 1-1-14. That’s the lowest fee among the large states covered here, well under Texas’s $68 and a third of Virginia’s $140. RN licenses expire October 31 of each odd-numbered year, so every active Indiana RN renews on the same statewide date rather than on a personal anniversary. Renewal forms go out in odd years for RNs (even years for LPNs), but a missed postcard doesn’t excuse a late renewal, the deadline is fixed and it’s yours to track.
