Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal in Maryland

Maryland gives you three roads to renewal and asks you to travel any one of them. Thirty continuing-education units is the road everyone advertises, but for a working nurse it’s often the hardest of the three. Maryland will also renew you on practice hours alone, or on a recent degree, without a single CEU. Knowing that can save you the cost of a CE package you didn’t need.

Three ways to satisfy the requirement

Under the Board’s renewal regulation, an active RN meets the competency requirement any one of these ways:

• 1,000 hours of active nursing practice within the five years before renewal. For a nurse working even part-time, this is usually already met, and it needs zero CEUs.
• Graduation from an approved nursing program within the past five years. The path for newer nurses.
• 30 continuing-education units (CEUs) within the two years before renewal. The classic CE route. Maryland also awards 15 CEUs for each college semester hour of qualifying coursework, so a single academic course can cover half the requirement.

The practical read matches North Carolina and Virginia, Maryland’s fellow option-based states: if you’ve been working, the practice-hours path is usually simpler and cheaper than buying 30 CEUs. Pick the road that fits what you’re already doing.

One training sits outside the three options

Whichever road you pick, Maryland adds a one-time training on top. Every applicant renewing a Maryland health occupations license attests to completing an approved implicit bias and structural racism training program, and the attestation lands at your first renewal after April 1, 2026. Nurses who already completed implicit bias training for an earlier renewal don’t repeat that piece. The statute sets no hour count, but the program has to be an approved one, so pick from the state’s approved list rather than any course with the word bias in the title. Keep the certificate.

Two rules to note if you take the CEU road: CEUs must be earned in the two years right before renewal, and they cannot be carried forward into the next cycle, so banking extra hours doesn’t help you later. Whatever option you use, keep your documentation for six years, Maryland runs random audits and can ask you to produce evidence within 30 days.

The cycle runs on your birth month and birth year

Maryland’s schedule is unusual and worth reading twice. You renew biennially, by the 28th day of your birth month, and which year depends on your birth year: an odd birth year renews in odd years, an even birth year in even years. So your renewal date is fixed to two facts that never change about you, which makes it easy to look up and, oddly, easy to forget because it isn’t the same for the nurse standing next to you.

The fee went up in 2025

Renewal is $191 for an active RN, and that number is current as of the fee increase that took effect July 1, 2025, so guidance quoting an older, lower figure is out of date. The $191 includes a mandatory $26 assessment for the Maryland Health Care Commission, which funds state health-data work and is bundled into every active RN renewal. That puts Maryland at the higher end nationally, near California’s $190, and the MHCC piece is the reason it edges above most neighbors.

Maryland is a compact state

Maryland is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
