Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal in Michigan

Michigan’s continuing education number is refreshingly plain: 25 hours every two years. The complication isn’t the count. It’s that Michigan stacks four separate mandates on top of and inside that 25, each with its own clock, and misreading any of them is how an otherwise-compliant nurse gets caught in a random audit.

The 25 hours, and the four rules hiding in them

Every Michigan RN completes at least 25 contact hours of board-approved continuing education in the two years before renewal. Inside and around that number:

• Pain and symptom management, at least 2 hours. These count toward the 25, they aren’t extra. It’s the one topic Michigan has required inside the CE total for years.
• Implicit bias, 1 hour every renewal cycle. Michigan phased this in on June 1, 2022. Your very first renewal after that date required 2 hours; every renewal since is 1 hour per cycle. This is a standing requirement now, not a one-time module.
• Human trafficking, a one-time training. Since January 6, 2022, every licensee certifies once that they’ve completed a training to identify victims of human trafficking. Once it’s done, it’s done, you attest to it and move on.
• Opioids and other controlled substances, one-time, conditional. This one only applies if you also hold a controlled-substance license. If you do, you complete a one-time controlled-substance awareness training before renewing.

There’s also a format cap that trips people up: no more than 12 of the 25 hours may be earned from online or electronic media within any 24-hour period. You can do the whole thing online, you just can’t cram it all into one sitting.

You attest, you don’t submit, and then you might get audited

Michigan doesn’t collect CE certificates at renewal. You renew through MiPLUS, accept an attestation that you’ve met the 25 hours including the pain-management minimum, and pay. The Board keeps no record of what you earned. That puts the burden on you: keep your documentation, because the Board runs a random audit after each renewal period and mails a percentage of licensees a demand for evidence. Michigan tells nurses to hold their records for four years, longer than the two-year cycle, precisely because the audit comes after the fact. The fee, and the grace period that isn’t free

Renewal is $131, paid by card through MiPLUS. That’s toward the higher end nationally, above Texas’s $68 and North Carolina’s $100, though below California’s $190. Michigan gives you a 60-day grace period after the deadline to renew without going through the full relicensure process, but it costs an extra $20 late fee. Past 60 days, you’re into relicensure, which is a heavier lift, so the grace window is a cushion, not a plan.

Michigan is not a compact state

This is the one that surprises people, because several online guides get it wrong. Michigan has not enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact. A Michigan RN license is a single-state license. To practice in another state, you apply for a license by endorsement there, one state at a time, exactly the way nurses in New York and California do.
