Mississippi keeps renewal about as simple as a state can. There is no continuing-education requirement to renew an active RN license, the Nursing Practice Law says so directly. You maintain your competence, attest at renewal, and that’s the requirement. The only time CE enters the picture is if you’ve been away from nursing for years.
No continuing education for active nurses
The Mississippi Board of Nursing states plainly that the Nursing Practice Law does not mandate CEUs as a condition of renewing or maintaining an RN or LPN license. What the law does require is that you maintain competency in your nursing practice, but it doesn’t translate that into a contact-hour count you have to buy and log. Because there’s no hour target, the CE calculator on this site isn’t shown for Mississippi, there’s nothing to total.
The single exception is about coming back, not staying current: an RN who has been out of practice for more than five years and is reactivating must complete 20 contact hours of accepted CE earned in the two years before applying. If you’ve been working, that rule doesn’t touch you. If you’re returning after a long gap, it’s the one CE requirement Mississippi will hold you to.
The cycle and fee
Mississippi renews RN licenses every two years. Renewal is $100 for an active license, straight from the Board’s published fee schedule, or $25 if you’d rather park the license on inactive status. Miss the deadline and you’re reinstating instead of renewing: $100 again, plus an administrative fee of $50 through January or $150 from February through June.
