Utah measures competence, not classroom time, and it gives working nurses the easiest possible proof: just keep working. Four hundred practice hours over two years satisfies the requirement on its own, no continuing education needed. The one thing every Utah nurse must do regardless is a short suicide-prevention training.
Three ways to meet competence, plus one non-negotiable
Over the two years before renewal, an active Utah RN meets the continuing-competence requirement any one of these ways:
- 400 hours of licensed practice. The path for anyone working even part-time, and it needs zero CE.
- 200 practice hours plus 15 CE hours. The middle option for a lighter work schedule.
- 30 CE hours. The path for a nurse who hasn’t been practicing enough to lean on hours.
On top of whichever option you use, Utah requires every renewing nurse to complete at least one approved suicide-prevention training. The Board keeps a short list of qualifying online modules (each worth about half a CE credit), and the good news is they count toward your CE if you’re taking the CE route. So it’s a genuine requirement, but a small one, and it doesn’t stack on top of your hours, it folds into them. It’s listed in the requirement box above as a reminder because it’s the piece nurses forget when they’re focused on the practice-hours math.
Renewal is biennial, on a fixed statewide date
Utah renews RN licenses every two years, and RN licenses expire January 31 of odd-numbered years (LPNs run on even years). Everyone renews on the same date, so it’s easy to look up. Let it lapse and reinstatement adds a fee, $20 if you’re 30 days late or less, $50 between 31 days and two years, and past two years the license can’t be renewed at all, you’d reapply from scratch.
The fee
Renewal is $68, from DOPL’s own renewal-cycle schedule, which lists every profession’s fee and deadline in one table. That’s among the cheapest RN renewals in this reference, well under California’s $190. The reinstatement fees stack on top of it rather than replacing it: $20 if you’re 30 days late or less, $50 from 31 days out to two years. If you also hold APRN licensure, that renews separately at $78 on the even-year cycle, so an APRN pays both.
Utah is a compact state
