Real Estate Agent License Renewal in Arkansas

Arkansas runs the shortest cycle in the country and puts the deadline in the wrong month on purpose. Every real estate licence in the state expires on December 31, and the renewal has to be filed, with the fee, by September 30. The statute is where that gap comes from: a renewal request has to reach the Commission at least ninety days before expiration. File on October 1 and you are not late by a day, you are filing to renew an expired licence.

Seven hours a year, one of them about your own safety

An active licensee completes 7 classroom hours a year. The statute sets the band at not less than six and not more than seven, and the Commission has set seven, so there is no year in which the number quietly drops.

One of those seven has to cover how real estate professionals can limit risk to preserve personal safety for agents and consumers. It is a single hour and it satisfies exactly one of the seven, which is the rule’s way of saying you cannot take a three-hour safety course and count it three times.

For 2026 the other six are elective. The Commission publishes a list running from licence law and trust-account record keeping to fair housing, 1031 timelines and property-condition issues, plus a short set of topics capped at two hours of content each. The one hard boundary is that everything has to be real estate related, and prelicensing hours cannot be recycled as continuing education in either direction.

The two dates that actually matter

Those are two separate deadlines with two separate penalties. Money is due in September. Education is due in December. Filing the renewal without proof of the hours does not stop the renewal, but the statute puts the licence on inactive status until the proof arrives, and reactivating costs a $30 reissuance fee.

Failing to complete the hours by December 31 at all can also draw a $100 citation from the Executive Director. Practising on an expired licence draws $250, and the same $250 lands on the supervising broker.

The fee is small and the late fee is a third again

Filed on or before September 30: $60 for a salesperson, $80 for a broker. Filed after: $80 and $110. Duplicate licences go from $30 to $60 on the same schedule.

Sixty dollars a year is among the cheapest licences anywhere, and it is worth noticing that Arkansas charges it every year rather than bundling two or three years into one larger bill.

Inactive is cheap now and expensive later

Nobody owes continuing education while a licence is inactive. Coming back is where the bill lands: activation costs seven hours for every year the licence was renewed inactive, capped at 30 classroom hours, which means the meter stops after roughly four years.

Two details make this stricter than it looks. The hours have to have been completed in the year you activate or the calendar year before it, so studying early and sitting on the certificates does not work. And the hours you use to activate cover only the year of activation, not the following year, so an agent who reactivates in November owes another seven hours weeks later.

An expired licence can be reinstated on reapplication within one year of the last calendar year in which it was renewed, and the expired year is then treated as if it had been inactive for education purposes. Miss that window and the Commission regards you as an original applicant, back to the exam.

New licensees have six months, not a year

A new salesperson completes an 18-hour post-licence course within six months of the date of initial licensure. A new broker completes a 30-hour one. The Commission writes the course content itself.

Two traps sit in the timing. The course cannot be taken before the licence is issued, so passing the exam early buys nothing. And an inactive new licensee still owes it: the Commission will not activate the licence until the post-licence course is done, however long the licence has sat.

How this compares

An annual cycle makes Arkansas hard to line up against most states, so compare the yearly rate. Seven hours a year is under North Carolina’s 8 a year, and well under the pace set by Virginia at 16 over two years or Wisconsin at 18. On price, $60 a year is more than North Carolina’s $45 and roughly the annual equivalent of Texas’s $110 every two years. What is unusual is the split: the fee deadline and the education deadline are three months apart, and only one of them is the date printed on the licence.
