Real Estate Agent License Renewal in Illinois

Illinois will tell you the answer is 12 hours. For a large share of currently licensed brokers, it isn’t. What you owe depends entirely on the date your broker license was first issued, and the newer you are, the bigger the number.

Which rule applies to you

Check your original licensure date first, before buying anything. IDFPR’s license lookup shows it.

• First licensed before November 1, 2023: you owe the familiar 12 hours, made up of a 6-hour Core course and 6 hours of electives. One of those electives has to be Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.
• First licensed between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2025: you owe 45 hours of post-license education, not 12 hours of CE. The post-license curriculum has the required hour of sexual harassment prevention training built in.
• First licensed on or after November 1, 2025: your license runs to April 30, 2028, and you owe the same 45 hours of post-license education by that date.

A broker in year two who buys a 12-hour CE package is buying the wrong thing. Post-license and CE are separate course catalogs with separate approved-provider lists, and hours from one do not substitute for the other.

There is also a transitional wrinkle for the 12-hour group: a 4-hour Core course taken between May 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025 satisfies the Core requirement for this renewal, but then you need 8 elective hours instead of 6 to reach the total.

Broker and managing broker are different licenses

Illinois does not use the word “salesperson.” The entry-level license is Broker, and the supervisory license is Managing Broker. That naming trips up agents moving from other states, and it matters at renewal because the two carry different fees and different CE fact sheets.

The cycle

Illinois renews brokers every two years, on April 30 of even-numbered years. It’s a statewide date rather than a personal anniversary, so every Illinois broker in the 12-hour group is working toward the same deadline at the same time, which is exactly when approved-provider seats get scarce. The 2026 deadline was April 30, 2026.

The fee

A broker renewing an unexpired license pays $200. A managing broker pays $250. Both figures come straight from the fee rule in the administrative code, not from a course vendor’s summary, which matters here because secondary sources commonly quote a lower number for this state.

Let it expire and a $75 late fee attaches for up to two years. Past two years but under five, restoration costs the sum of every lapsed renewal fee plus a late fee, so the cost of neglect compounds per missed cycle rather than sitting flat.

Certifying, and being asked to prove it

You certify compliance on the renewal application itself. IDFPR can then ask for evidence, and the burden of producing it is yours, so keep completion records even though providers report to the state. The Department publishes a CE lookup that shows what has actually been recorded against your license, which is the number that counts at renewal.

Attorneys admitted to practice under Illinois Supreme Court rule are exempt from CE, but they still have to certify compliance on the application rather than skipping the question.

How this compares

At $200 every two years, Illinois costs more than New York’s $65 and Texas’s $110 while asking for the fewest ongoing hours of the four states here, 12 against Texas’s 18 and New York’s 22.5. The catch is the front end: a newly licensed Illinois broker owes 45 post-license hours, which is the same shape of requirement Florida imposes on its new sales associates.
