South Dakota requires no continuing education for RN renewal. Competency is met by nursing practice: at least 140 hours in any 12-month period, or 480 hours in the preceding 6 years (ARSD 20:48:04.01). A nurse who can't verify the hours completes a Board-approved RN refresher course instead.
What these figures do and do not cover
The hours figure is the requirement for an ordinary active renewal. It does not include first-renewal or post-licence education, which several boards set separately and which is usually larger. The fee is the board's own renewal charge and excludes late penalties, reinstatement and any third-party processing fee. Each profession page spells both out.
Deadlines are worth checking on the profession page rather than here. Some boards renew everyone on one date, some on the licensee's birthday, and some set different dates for different licence types inside the same profession.
