Florida’s 24-hour requirement looks simple until you hit the mandatory-topic breakdown, which is the most granular of any state we track. It asks for fewer hours than California’s 30, but it tells you what most of them have to be about, which is the harder constraint to plan around. Florida was also one of the original Nursing Licensure Compact states, which shapes some of its renewal rules in ways nurses moving from non-compact states don’t expect.
The topics that don’t move
Every renewal, no exceptions: 2 hours on preventing medical errors, 2 hours on Florida’s own nursing laws and rules, and 2 hours on human trafficking. That’s 6 of your 24 hours locked to specific content, and the rest goes to general elective CE, usually 18 hours, or 16 when the rotating workplace-impairment course (below) is due that cycle.

The topics that rotate
Recognizing workplace impairment comes due every other renewal, not every one. Domestic violence training shows up every third renewal, and it’s additional to the 24-hour total rather than counted inside it, so budget for 26 hours that cycle, not 24.

The one course that skips board approval

Human trafficking training is the outlier: Florida Statutes Section 464.013 lets you complete it without a Board-approved provider, as long as the course content meets the statute’s criteria. Every other mandatory topic needs an approved provider, so don’t assume the same leniency applies across the board.
Your renewal date isn’t the same as everyone else’s
Florida assigns RNs to staggered renewal groups rather than a single statewide deadline, so two nurses licensed the same year can still have different expiration dates depending on their group. Recent cycles have run expirations across April and July of consecutive years. Check your specific expiration date on your license record rather than assuming a colleague’s renewal deadline applies to you too.
Florida is a compact state, and the compact restricts single-state licenses
Florida implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018. If Florida is your primary state of residence, your RN license functions as a multistate license, letting you practice in other compact states such as Georgia, Texas, or Ohio without a separate application, and it renews automatically alongside your standard renewal. The compact rule cuts the other way too: if you hold a multistate license from another compact state, you generally can’t also hold or maintain a single-state Florida license at the same time, and a nurse who changes primary residency into or out of Florida has to apply for licensure by endorsement in the new home state immediately, with no grace period to keep operating on the old state’s license.
What it costs, and what happens if you’re late
$75 on time, active-to-active. Miss the window and it jumps to $130. Keep missing it and the license moves through a defined decline: it becomes Delinquent immediately after the expiration date if your status still shows Clear/Active or Clear/Inactive, and if it stays unrenewed for a full two years past expiration, it converts to Null and Void, a status the Board does not allow you to reactivate from. At that point the only path back is reapplying from scratch under whatever licensure requirements are current at the time, not simply catching up on the old renewal.
Five dollars of every renewal goes to unlicensed-activity enforcement, another five to the Nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program, both baked into the posted fee rather than itemized separately at checkout.

Verifying a license
Florida’s Department of Health runs MQA license verification, the public lookup tool for confirming any Florida nursing license’s current status, and Florida also participates in Nursys for multistate compact verification. Employers checking a candidate’s license, or a nurse confirming their own record shows current rather than delinquent, should use MQA’s tool directly rather than a third-party listing.
Add your renewal deadline to your calendar
Enter your expiration date and download a calendar file. Your own calendar will remind you at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days out. We don't ask for your email, we store nothing, and the date never leaves your device.
Works with Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, and Outlook. This is a convenience, not a compliance service. Confirm your exact deadline with the Florida Board of Nursing.
How many CE hours do you have left?
Florida requires 24 CE hours this cycle. Enter what you've completed and see what's left. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
Hours alone aren't the whole requirement. Some must be these specific topics:
- Prevention of medical errors (2 hrs, every renewal)
- Florida laws and rules (2 hrs, every renewal)
- Human trafficking (2 hrs, every renewal)
- Recognizing impairment in the workplace (2 hrs, every other renewal)
- Domestic violence (2 hrs, every third renewal, additional to the 24)
- HIV/AIDS (1 hr, one-time before first renewal)
A convenience, not a compliance service. Confirm your exact requirement with the Florida Board of Nursing. This is not legal advice.
Continuing education hours per renewal cycle
Florida asks for 24 hours. That is below the median of 30 across the 37 states that set a flat hour count, which run from 8 to 40. Ranked lowest to highest, Florida is 14 of 37.
Renewal fee
Florida charges $75. The median across the 49 states that publish a figure is $100, running from $50 to $245. Ranked cheapest to dearest, Florida is 9 of 49.
Each mark is one state. The taller line is the median, the filled dot is Florida. States that set no flat hour count, or publish no fee, are left out of that comparison rather than counted as zero.
Where can you practice with your license?
The Nurse Licensure Compact lets a nurse who lives in a compact state hold one multistate license and practice in every other compact state. Pick where you live to see whether that's you, and where it reaches.
Member data from the NCSBN Nurse Licensure Compact map, verified July 2026. A multistate license requires the compact state to be your primary residence. This is a convenience, not legal advice. Confirm your status with your board or at nursecompact.com.
