Georgia keeps its nursing CE requirement straightforward: 30 hours, one two-year cycle, no rotating mandatory-topic list like Florida’s. The complexity here is procedural, not topical, and the biggest thing the fee-and-hours summary leaves out is that Georgia is a Nursing Licensure Compact state, which changes what your license actually lets you do.

Georgia is a compact state, and that matters at renewal

Georgia implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018, one of the original wave of states. If Georgia is your primary state of residence, a Georgia RN license is a multistate license by default: it lets you practice in any of the other 40-plus compact states without applying for a separate license in each one. That’s a real advantage over nurses licensed in non-compact states like California, Illinois, or New York, who need a separate license for every state they want to work in.

The renewal itself doesn’t require you to do anything extra to keep the multistate privilege. As long as Georgia stays your legal residence and your license stays current, the compact status renews along with the license. Where it gets complicated is if you move: change your primary state of residence to a non-compact state, and Georgia can no longer be the state issuing your multistate license, so you’d need to establish licensure in your new home state instead.

Renewal windows aren’t year-round

Unlike states where you renew any time within a rolling window tied to your birth month, Georgia posts a defined renewal window that the Board sets and announces. For the most recent cycle, RN, APRN, and Georgia Approved Assistant renewals opened November 1, 2025 and had to be completed by January 31, 2026. Don’t assume the dates repeat exactly the same way every cycle; confirm the current window with the Board rather than reusing last cycle’s calendar.

Miss the January 31 deadline and Georgia gives you a short late window, February 1 through February 28 of that same year, to renew before the license lapses outright. The Board’s own guidance is blunt about what happens if you miss both windows: you may not legally practice as a nurse in Georgia until the license is renewed or reinstated. This isn’t a soft deadline with an implied grace period, it’s an active-to-lapsed cliff with one short month to catch it.

If you also hold an APRN license

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in Georgia renew in a specific order: your RN license has to be renewed first, before the Board will process your APRN renewal. That means submitting two separate applications through the GOALS portal, not one combined form. An APRN who renews the APRN license first, or assumes one application covers both, will find the APRN renewal rejected or stalled until the RN side is done.
