Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal in Iowa

Iowa is one of the very few states that renews on a three-year clock instead of two, and that single fact reshapes everything about how you plan CE here. Thirty-six contact hours sounds like a lot next to a two-year state’s twenty-something, until you remember you have three years to earn it, that’s twelve hours a year, one of the gentler annual paces in the country.

Thirty-six hours over three years, or one shortcut

An active Iowa RN completes 36 contact hours of continuing education per three-year cycle (a contact hour is 60 minutes). Iowa also gives you a clean way to cover the entire 36 at once:

• A current national nursing certification or recertification counts as the full 36 contact hours.
• A Board-approved nurse refresher course counts toward the hours.
• A nurse residency program counts as the full 36 contact hours.

So a certified nurse has essentially already met Iowa’s CE requirement by maintaining that certification, no separate 36 hours to chase. For everyone else, twelve hours a year keeps you on track without a scramble in year three.

Separate from the 36 is Iowa’s mandatory reporter requirement: nurses who examine, attend, counsel, or treat children or dependent adults must complete the state’s Mandatory Reporter of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse course. It runs on its own schedule set by the training, not the nursing cycle, so treat it as a parallel obligation rather than part of the 36. Keep your CE documentation for four years, a year past the cycle, because Iowa audits after the fact.

Three years, on your birth month

Iowa renews RN licenses every three years, expiring the 15th of your birth month. You can renew up to 60 days early. Miss the 15th and you’re late: there’s a 30-day grace period, but renewing in it costs the $99 fee plus a $50 late fee that the Board cannot waive. That non-waivable late fee is the detail to respect, the three-year gap between renewals is exactly what makes the date easy to lose track of.

Renewal is $99, straight from the Board’s renewal page, with the non-waivable $50 late fee if you slip into the grace period. Spread across three years, $99 is one of the lowest annual license costs in this reference, another upside of the triennial cycle.

Iowa is a compact state

Iowa implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018.
