What Missouri does hold you to is a hard deadline with no grace period, and a renewal fee that quietly went up, a change most CE-vendor pages still haven’t caught.
No continuing education required
The Missouri State Board of Nursing does not require continuing education for RN license renewal. There’s no hour count, no mandatory-topic list, no CE attestation to sign. Missouri expects you to maintain the competence your license implies, it just doesn’t make you document CE credits to renew. What renewal actually involves is confirming your record through the MOPRO portal. Answering “yes” to a disciplinary or conduct question is what triggers additional work, so that, not CE, is the substance of a Missouri renewal.
The deadline is strict, and there’s no grace period
This is where Missouri is unforgiving. RN licenses expire on April 30 of each odd-numbered year, and the renewal window opens February 1. The board is explicit that there is no grace period: you must renew at least three business days before the expiration date, and if you miss it, the license lapses and you’re into reinstatement rather than a simple late renewal. Everyone renews on the same statewide date, so the deadline is easy to look up and, precisely because it’s shared and fixed, easy to assume you’ll remember. Don’t assume, the no-grace-period rule turns a forgotten date into a lapsed license overnight.
The fee that went up
Renewal is $85, and this is worth reading carefully because it’s the figure most often reported wrong. Missouri’s fee rule set the professional-nurse biennial renewal at $60 effective January 1, 2013, then raised it to $85 effective July 1, 2021. Plenty of CE-provider guides still quote the old $60. The current, rule-based amount is $85, straight from the board’s fee schedule. That puts Missouri below Virginia’s $140 and near Michigan’s $131, and it’s the same $85 whether you renew a Missouri-resident license or hold a compact privilege to practice here.
