Wyoming keeps renewal simple and cheap, and it lets working nurses skip continuing education entirely. Meet one competency out of five, pay $90, done. The only thing to get right is which number applies to you, because the CE option here is bigger than most guides claim.
One competency, five ways to meet it
For each two-year renewal, an active Wyoming RN meets one of these in the past two years:
- 400 hours of nursing practice as an RN. For anyone working even part-time, this is usually already met, and it requires zero CE.
- 40 contact hours of continuing education. Note the number: it’s 40, not the 30 that several CE-vendor pages quote. If you’re taking the CE route, plan for 40.
- Passing the NCLEX during the period, which covers new and returning nurses.
- Completing a refresher course. The route for a nurse coming back after time away who hasn’t rebuilt practice hours yet.
- Completing a nursing education program that confers a degree beyond your basic nursing education. Finish an RN-to-BSN or a master’s during the cycle and the degree itself is the competency.
Most guides stop after the first three, so the last two are worth knowing: a nurse mid-degree or fresh off a refresher course owes nothing further.
The practical read is the same as in the neighboring practice-hour states: if you’ve been working, the 400-hour path is simplest and free. The 40-hour CE route is the fallback for a nurse who hasn’t hit the practice threshold and isn’t covered by one of the other three. The CE calculator on this site targets the 40-hour figure, but check your practice hours first, they may already cover you.
The cycle
Wyoming renews RN licenses every two years, expiring December 31 of even-numbered years. The renewal window runs October 1 through December 31 through the Wyoming Nurse Portal, so you have a full quarter to complete it. Keep documentation for whichever competency you claimed.
